Editing admin user resets roles

After creating a new site, I try to edit the details of my admin user to set the first/last name. Despite the superuser role being checked, saving the user clears the roles and I can no longer administer the site. I check this by running script/console, then verifying that User.first.roles is an empty array, whereas before it was not. I've duplicated this twice thus far.
