Outline thoughts about notification engine

Outline an engine that will:

  1. Send out email notifications to users based on system events. For example, an automatic payment did not go through. This could possibly also handle events like a comment being posted to a thread.

  2. Set messages on the site based on events coming in. Will also handle setting state. For example, when payment doesn't go through, the account is in a "delinquent" state, and displays a message on all pages until the state changes. We may want to use this state to disable some of the functionality of the site for this account.
